Ani Ski Resort

During a winter of heavy snow, Ani Ski Area is not only a place to enjoy skiing but also a site where you can see fantastic frost-covered trees in February that have been called rare all over the world. There are 5 courses that are divided into levels from beginners to experienced skiers, and in the fresh snow zone, you can enjoy skiing on good quality powder snow. However, the No. 1 highlight at Ani Ski Area is near the mountaintop where frost-covered trees spread out. Take the gondola to the peak and walk 5 minutes where you can view the picturesque scenery of these trees. Nearby is a walking course, and while walking among the trees, you can appreciate their frost-covered beauty. On weekends from February to early March, you can even participate in a night tour of the trees where you climb up the mountain by snow coach and enjoy the mysterious trees and a view of the nightscape of the town below you. A famous tourist spot that can be accessed from Ani Ski Area is Kakunodate which involves a 1.5-hour tour starting from Aniai Station on the Akita Nairiku Line. The sight of old samurai residences has been given the name of “Michinoku no Sho-Kyoto” (The Little Kyoto of the North), and there are visiting tourists all year. Also, the nearby Animaeda Station is popular as Akita Prefecture’s only station with an onsen where visitors can relax in a day-trip hot spring.
