River Boat Ride in Geibikei Gorge
Geibikei Gorge stretches over 2 km along a steep limestone cliff measuring over 50 m high. It follows the Satetsu River, a tributary of the largest river in Iwate Prefecture, the Kitakami River. On October 8, 1925, it was designated a national natural monument and place of scenic beauty. It was the first site in the prefecture to earn the latter designation. The gorge is also counted among the best 100 landscapes of Japan. The river is surrounded by steep cliffs of more than 100 m high that form a typical Japanese landscape of deep mountains and valleys, which was also designated place of scenic beauty. The colors of the landscape change each season, with fresh green and Japanese wisterias in spring, brisk breezes in dark green leaves in summer, colored foliage in fall, and snow in winter!
